Are there rules I should follow when I explore the tide pools?

In addition to laws and regulations, efforts are being made across the state of California to reduce the negative impacts of human activities on tide pools. When visiting tide pools, it is good to follow a number of good tide pool visitor rules:

  • Never remove plants, animals, or shells from the tide pool habitats, particularly if you are within a "Marine Protected Area" where you could potentially be fined.

  • Look but do not touch; certainly do not pull plants or animals off the rocks.

  • Walk gently and try to avoid walking on plants and animals.

  • Never turn over rocks.
